Is it possible your machine is falling into iowait and that's what's blocking selects?
If this is a Linux box, install sysstat and do: iostat 5 The first response will be an average since startup, and then you'll get 5 second averages. Watch the iowait% figure... if that's over say 10%, that might be your problem.
