Did you specify the correct field with the search? If you just specified entered the word in the search box without the field, the search would be made against your default search field (defined in schema.xml).
If you go to the "full interface" link on the admin page, you can then click the debug:enable checkbox which will give you a lot more information about what the parsed query looks like..
