Mike, why don't order by the number of found items in your facet? If you get too many facets, just throw those away that got the smallest value, if you got not enough place for them. I suggest that, because you don't know every search-case.
Sometimes the user does not really know what he is searching for or how to make his search more special and faceting helps him to navigate over a search-result.
