So right now I'm thinking that solr just doesn't like me.

e.g. solr ignores the <field tags
This seems like very odd behavior to me, so I'm inclined to start talking
about my environment.
I'm running on an opensuse 11.2 laptop, 64 bit. 4gb ram. JDK 1.6, both JDK
and IcedTea
The behavior seems very odd.
I did find the web based luke interface - /solr/admin/luke and this
confirmed the same.
