In fact, I just followed the instructions titled as Tomcat On Windows.
Here are the updates on my computer
1. -Dsolr.solr.home=C:\solr\example
2. change dataDir to <dataDir>C:\solr\example\data</dataDir> in solrconfig.xml
at C:\solr\example\conf
3. created solr.xml at C:\Tomcat 5.5\conf\Catalina\localhost
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<Context docBase="c:/solr/example/apache-solr-1.3.0.war" debug="0"
crossContext="true">
  <Environment name="solr/home" type="java.lang.String" value="c:/solr/example"
override="true"/>
</Context>

I restarted Tomcat, went to http://localhost:8080/solr/admin/
Entered video in Query String field, and got
/**********************************************
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
- <response>
- <lst name="responseHeader">
  <int name="status">0</int>
  <int name="QTime">0</int>
- <lst name="params">
  <str name="rows">10</str>
  <str name="start">0</str>
  <str name="indent">on</str>
  <str name="q">video</str>
  <str name="version">2.2</str>
  </lst>
  </lst>
  <result name="response" numFound="0" start="0" />
  </response>
********************************************/
My questions are
1. is the setting correct?
2. where does solr start to search words entered in Query String field
3. how can I make result page like general searching result page, such as, not
found, if found, a url, instead of xml will be returned.

Thanks a lot for your helps,

Jill

Have you gone through the solr tomcat wiki?

http://wiki.apache.org/solr/SolrTomcat

I found this very helpful when I did our solr installation on tomcat.
