Sussed it. As you would imagine it was the stupidest of things. And probably the *one* thing left out of my description. My solr.xml file had an illegal character at the top of the file. I hadn't noticed it until the error logs pushed me in the right direction. Thanks for the pointer. Cheers, Tim
