At last... I understand! This is a biggy that in my case seems
to make a massive difference. I will look for somewhere to add 
the following to the wiki....

 "If you are indexing massive amounts of content and you
  know there are no duplicates then disabling the duplicate 
  checking with allowDups=true can save lots of time"
