In the example schema.xml, there is a field type 'ignored' which it is suggested can be used with the wildcard * to prevent errors when a document contains fields that don't match any in the schema. My experience recently in using this is that it does not worked as desired if the unmatched field is multiValued, and that that suggested * field should be designated multiValued:
