+(-...) vs +(*:* -...) vs -(+...)

Dear reader,

why does +(-x_ss:y) finds 0 docs,

while -(+x_ss:y) finds many docs?

Ok... +(*:* -x_ss:y) works, too, but I'm a bit surprised.
