: I heard a story that the 'r' in Solr back in the CNet days stood for Resin : (the servlet container). True? Clearly the "w/ replication" makes more sense : now as probably both Tomcat and Jetty deployments are more common now.
Some of the naming history has been discussed on the list in the past... http://www.nabble.com/Re%3A-Solr-Logo-thought-p18882285.html ..but in a nutshell: yes the "R" in "SOLAR" stood for "Resin", but that it was really just a shoehorned "backronym" because "someone" wanted people to be able to say their apps were "Solar Powered" (i'm pretty sure that someone was Clay -- but I can't swear to it) CNET Has a long history of people coming up with internal project names they think sound cool, and then backronym-ing them just for the hell of it. -Hoss
