Hi Seamus, Have you looked at the "contrib" module? The "contrib" module is a collection of commonly used packages that aren't strictly required for Solr's "core". What's more, "contrib" is pretty large: it takes up ~82mb of a ~185mb Solr distribution. If you don't plan on using any contrib modules, that's where I'd start.
