Indexing to an alias should send the documents only to the first collection in the alias. I am not aware of any problems in this functionality.
Before opening a Jira, can we see the full stacktrace from the error, so we can look into it? Can you confirm that 7.2.1 is the version that created the stacktrace?
I don't know whether RELOAD is supported on aliases. It would be good to see that stacktrace as well.
