Asked the question on IRC, mirroring it here too: In lucene level QP there is a comment https://github.com/apache/lucene-solr/blob/lucene_solr_4_10/lucene/queryparser/src/java/org/apache/lucene/queryparser/classic/QueryParser.jj#L99 pointing to some contrib query parser, that offers modularity and customizability.
