I really can't imagine ngrams followed by a stemmer really being that useful, but I've been wrong once or twice before. Well, a lot more than once or twice. But this pair isn't something I've ever really seen before.
I'd make use of the admin/analysis page for your field to see why it appears to work better, I suspect that you're seeing more matches per query than otherwise, but I also suspect that the matches aren't very good.
