Well, frankly if what they have already serves their needs, I see no reason they should switch. Investing time and effort in "more modern technology" without a compelling reason is a waste.
Personally, I'd just leave the argument there. Talk to the stake-holders in the product and get them to list out the changes/improvements they want to make. And any that aren't easy/possible with what they have now but _could_ be done with Solr that either 1> stand out as must haves and _require_ changing. or 2> they can live without. As the wish-list items accumulate, the pressure will build and they'll move to Solr. And, if there is no such accumulation, their resources can frankly be better allocated to things that are priorities IMO.
