Have you looked at the "managed schema" stuff? see: https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/solr/Managed+Schema+Definition+in+SolrConfig There's also some work being done to update at least parts of solrconfig.xml, see: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-6533
