searching where a value is not null?

Hi all.

I'm trying to construct a query that in pseudo-code would read
like this:

field != ''

I'm finding it difficult to write this as a solr query, though.
Stuff like:

NOT field:()

doesn't seem to do the trick.

any ideas?
