Solr itself should run fine on any JVM 1.5, including Windows (and several Solr developers are working on Windows IIUC). Some of our docs refer to auxiliary scripts that do not run under plain windows. The SimplePostTool described in http://lucene.apache.org/solr/tutorial.html helps, it's not released yet but you can get it from https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/SOLR-194 -Bertrand
