Yep. The client code for the even/odd List is really simple.
Something like this:

for (int i=0; i<list.size(); i++) {
    if (i%2 == 1) sb.append("<b>");
    sb.append(handyXmlQuotingMethod(list.get(i)));
    if (i%2 == 1) sb.append("</b>");
}
