We aren't so much changing kernels as trying to select one. We're going
to try CentOS with the latest stable mainline kernel from the Linux
Kernel Archives ... 2.6.39.2.
We'll let you know how it goes!

For this problem, I think I won't recommend you anything.
I use Debian for years, but instead of using the debian supplied
kernel, I can't get the newest vanilla kernel fast enough. So I'm
no reference on this topic.
I think Ubuntu is a bit picky on its precise kernel, but the procedure
I described worked very well.
IMHO you should not change distro upon a problem...
