it turns out that libreoffice HAS Thesaurus files, for several languages.
Not sure if they are good for use with Vim, but they are available and
maintained.
They can be found here:

if it is still widely pointed to. I found online a mirror, but the
Thesaurus part seems to be missing, even if it is named in the README file:
