I have actually cross-posted this on ServerFault.
My problem is that I'd like to auto-deploy a WAR file with a fixed

(And if you run Debian squeeze you can install the tomcat6 package.)

Write a class that implements a ServletContextListener and then add it
to your web.xml as a listener. It creates a hook for startup as well as
shutdown. I use this to build my own database pool and store it as an
attribute of the servlet context for later.

I have finally fixed this problem. It was to do with the Resource tags
name parameter in server.xml not matching the res-ref-name tag in the
applications WEB-INF/web.xml file.

Could you include your ant script? Make sure that you have the proper
directory structure, and that you have a web.xml file in the WEB-INF file.
ANT script can definitely cause errors in the war file creation.
