Going to JRE 5.0 (aka JDK 1.5) is probably better, but if you can't do
it, we've had no problems staying on 1.4.2 with Tomcat

Not true. The 5.5 versions run fine on a 1.4 JRE, as long as you
download and install the compat.zip
