ns in the database by removing '/files/' in the path and tried to access
the files; I got the HTTP Error 505 on my desktop as well...

Both FF2.0 and Tomcat 5.0 support HTTP 1.1 , so that's definitely not the issue.
I don't know if you ruled this one out: Is the laptop connected to some sort of
a proxy server?

request.
I doubt if firewalls also need to be considered.
