Thanks for the tip. Opening pulse audio volume control didn't fix it, but going to the Configuration tab and changing the output from one HDMI device to another and back did. Except that the audio is now delayed by a couple seconds. I've thought it was an initialization error for quite some time

I've had issues with distorted audio played via HDMI since Sept. 2019 on 3 different computers. You can make out speech played via HDMI, but it is really distorted. After a time it sounds normal, ie undistorted. It used to occur the every time when a computer was booted. Now it seems to occur
