There were memory leaks in evince, I don't know if they got fixed.
One problem I saw was, if you zoomed in then out then in, the memory foot print
would increase.

There may be something here http://www.pendrivelinux.com/ that can help you. I
know it has options for usinf a FDD to start a USB drive, as I’ve used that
method myself on lod machines.
