I want lifeline (genealogy program). I don't find it packaged for Fedora 15.
I do find an OpenSuSE rpm, apparently appropriate for my architecture.
In general, would I be better off using a non-native RPM or compiling it
myself?

I have already yum'd fvwm. It is not the most lightweight GUI available, but
I like the huge desktop and "everything is configurable." I just wish it

y of the Gnome experience. Boo-hoo-hoo! I will try to bear up under
the pain. :) But actually gnome seems to work fine -- well as fine as a
bloated, moron GUI can work. And the good console is restored on exit from
Gnome.
Now on to the hell of trying to bring up ppp on demand ...

I find bug reports back at least as far as Fedora 10 indicating console
resolution has been broken (by setting an unreadable resolution in the
kernel) since at least Fedora 10.
What was the last release of Fedora in which the console actually worked?

5 console?
(Previously:
yes, yum will install wvdial, which is not installed with the GUI install,
but as I have mentioned, yum will not run unless the fedora and update repos
are disabled because (says yum) their .xml files do not have section
headings. If you disable those repos, you do not have to e
nsole font, and text mode resolution before I go blind. Unicode is of the
devil.
I'm used to using lynx with all the options compiled in as a file manager,
and in the distance is the problem of getting source code and compiling lynx
again to replace the packaged version.

How do I get virtual consoles to use (always) a plain old VGA text mode
font in 80x25 (charactersXlines) resolution?
I've got my nose against a really big ass high res screen and it is like
the default font is some kind of weird graphics mode thing.

Otherwise, I just got a nine piece coaster set for $30 from OSdisc.com.
(PS: I am a 20-year user of FreeBSD.)
