And you are using ttyS0 for the serial port and that is the first real
hardware serial port, not the first USB serial port and at boot the
first usb serial port may not even actually exist yet...

I just set up an HP 9125e ink jet. What a job. The tools expect dumb
networks and it took me hours to figure out how to get things setup.
But it is done now. I got through their Android setup program and got
the printer's ethernet working as I want.
