VDQ: F17 xscreensaver error

When I go from the Main Menu to Settings to Screensaver and launch xscreensaver, I get an error saying the daemon isn't running; and trying to start it gets me another error, saying "Please check your $PATH and permissions." Would some kind soul please tell me what that means?
