There are various open source solutions out there to do what you're
looking for, but there is no "built-in" way to do what you want to do
using plain Java. I saw someone else suggest one-jar which is what I
would have suggested, too. There is another one called Meta Jar
the ant
user's guide, and I couldn't find such a task, but is there a way to execute a
short shell script from within the build.xml file?

I think this really depends on what you are executing with your shell
script. Do the same scripts hang when you execute outside ant, using
rexec or ssh? Try using nohup and be sure to background any processes
you start.

ct migrates to using Maven2. The entire process
helped me to gain a better understanding of Maven2 and its configuration
and repositories, which was nice, but I would have rather spent that
time working on real code, instead of finessing the Maven plugin.

advantage of target dependencies, or our task, which was
based off of Ant-Contrib's task.

I can check whether a file exists and set a property, but can I check
whether a property exists and set a property based on whether it
exists?
I don't mind how this is checked, I just need to make sure that my
JUnit test stops if the property isn't set.
