The freeze I described above seems to happen when I need su access, if I try
anything with sudo it never terminates, fx sudo ls just keeps going, and ctrl+c

Apparently I was to quick on the trigger, after I added gdm to the the
start procedure with "# update-rc.d gdm defaults" I ended up in the same
problem as I had in the start, but when I remove gdm again and start gdm
with "# /etc/init.d/gdm start" it start up fine, and sound seems to work
perfect (

my usb pen, and the speed started at 8 mb/sec and ended at 1.5 mb/sec.

I have a T61 (nvidia 140M), and I also get a black screen when booting
the live cd, but after a _long_ wait I finally get the live desktop, and
can install. The problem with black screen during boot is also present
after installation of ubuntu, the first thing i see (after grub) is the
nvidia logo.
