Same problem when i tried Intrepid on a live boot cd :
I have recently found that using OSS (Open Sound System) apposed to Alsa
seems to work.

I can also confirm that the sound does not work on my system with the
8.1 release.
Is the Intel ICH8 chipset supported by Alsa? It is not listed in the
sound card list but yet a patch for it was mentioned in the v1.0.11
release (http://www.alsa-
project.org/main/index.php/Changes_v1.0.10_v1.0.11).
