I think this is due to your video out setting of gmplayer being set to xmga.
Launch gmplayer (type gmplayer in a terminal), and right-click the main
window, choosing Preferences. In the video tab, note that the top option
is highlighted (xmga). This doesn't work with all systems.

I had the same issue with Karmic. When I first played an MP3 the plugin
assistant suggested 3 different packages to install. I only chose to
install one of them (the ffmpeg one), and as a result Totem could play

Thank you Asfand Qazi - I was going round in circles until I saw your
post. These steps fixed the issue for me:
remove all backports using apt-get
sudo apt-get install --reinstall bcmwl-kernel-source
modprobe -r lib80211
modprobe wl

Thumbs up to the solution given by Nexos in comment #88 - I added the
the two PPA lines given in the link, ran update manager and installed
all updates, and since then the networking has stayed enabled between
restarts for the first time in a long time.
