I can confirm that the "options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1" solution
works for me as well.
FilipK: Please ensure that all of your mixer controls are unmuted. I
sometimes get the buzz you are describing when my volume is muted, but
there as a program that is trying to output audio.

I will attempt running the alsa-info.sh script. I found a solution for
Hardy, which was to add the pci=noacpi option to the kernel options
which fixed the sound issues there, this didn't work for me in Intrepid
though.

I am having the exact same problem as described here. I am running an
upto date install of Ubuntu 8.10 x86_64. I have an nVidia 9200M GS, and
the drivers I am using are the latest nVidia beta drivers. The
"workaround" I have found for this is to alt+f2 > metacity --replace,
open up totem, un-maximi
Under Jaunty the workaround is the same as for Intrepid. Adding "options
snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1" to "/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf" fixes
the stuttering issue.
