I have the same problem on 2.6.24-17-xen.
I tried to restart in single user mode, and the kernel boot well !
It crashes after doing:
$>/etc/init.d/hal start (it requires dbus to start before)
maybe hal conflict with xen in any way ?

I think this issue could depend on the fact i'm using two monitors on my
laptop.
I tested when i use only the laptop monitor the applet works fine. However when
the second monitor is attached the nm-applet stop working.
I don't know if this behaviour can be reproduced on any laptop.

I have the same problem using raw lvm logical volumes as disk on Ubuntu 18.04.
When i try to start a vm with virt-manager qemu says Permission denied on
device.
The lvm uses device mapper to map the logical volumes so i need to
handle devices like

This issue still persists to me. Really am I the only one ?
I would add some info to help you to replicate this issue. Please could
someone give me information on how to enable debugging and to analyze
nm-applet behaviours ?

On my laptop when rebooting with attached external monitor, icons and
text disappear from the gdm3 greeter (as in the picture in attachment).
This issue does not occur when rebooting using only one monitor.

Well using nvidia proprietary driver is solving for me (nothing changed
in gdm3 custum.conf).
I switched to the nouveau driver when, a couple on month ago, nvidia
driver stop working with the new linux kernel version. But it seems they
have some other issue at now (i just filed a new bug report :D
