I'm having the same exact problem. Sound is stereo and comes from all
speakers, but nothing changes when I run vlc --aout alsa --alsadev
surround51. In windows, VLC plays the video perfectly with 5:1 sound.

I'm having this issue with my ecs amd690gm-m2, realtek alc883. Everything
worked perfectly with ubuntu 8.1, but now I have no 5:1 sound after upgrading
to 9.04.
As described above, when I choose 5:1 sound in VLC, i get this error:

Same problem; Ubuntu 9.04x64, Geforce 8600GT, newest Nvidia drivers,
full desktop effects. I really hope it gets fixed; I use VNC on a
regular basis.

Same problem here. Never had this problem with 9.04, but it started with
the first 9.10 beta and is still present with 9.10 final. I get a pop
before every track played and before every audio notification. Audio
works fine otherwise. I haven't found any way to fix this.
