It seems the only way to get gstreamer to work the way you want is to override
every one of its settings with something you want. I was finally able to use
this pipeline:
audio/x-raw-int,rate=44100,channels=2 ! lame name=enc mode=0 vbr=4
vbr-quality=0 quality=0 vbr-min-bitrate=32 vbr-max-bitrat

Trayicon was unchecked at the time of the crash. Desktop is xfce.
Failure happened with Xubuntu 15.04 Beta 2. I can't remember the exact
situation leading up to the crash, so I haven't been able to reprodu
getting same message on lenovo G500

confirming same issue here on Lenovo G500/i3/intel graphics with fresh
install of 14.04. One note: if I suspend using the "logout/suspend"
dialogue, then resume using power button, system comes up with black
screen. As soon as I begin typing password, lightlocker PW dialog is
displayed and machi
confirming fix in post 56. same experience as in #60 - slow to appear
and some display flickering, but it does work.

I believe I found it. I modified the file
/usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.upower.policy/org.freedesktop.upower.policy
and set
yes
yes
then went away for a while. When I returned, the machine was asleep and
woke up normally.
