I've also experienced this problem. It looks like the java (both 5 and
6) plugin is having the same issue: the plugin link is placed in a
directory that the browser never looks in for plugins.

I just installed that package, and while it seems like the stuttering is
less frequent, it's still occurring, but I've only listened to music for
a few minutes with the new alsa drivers installed... a long period of
listening may prove that the problem is still just as bad as before.

Seeing the same problem here with an AGP Radeon x1650. I don't know if
this will narrow anything down, but I've noticed that With Compiz
disabled, when I run Neverball it runs just fine, but when I enter the
Options menu, this bug is triggered and it becomes too slow to be
usable.

Bump is anyone out there looking at this??
As a note of interest, this same issue occurs with the x64 live CD,
however I went back and tried the alpha 5 build and the boot process was
much more successful (although there seemed to be some X initialization
issues).
