I've finally had some more time to look at this. I've had a proper look
at Joseph's suggestion of installing the version 3.11 kernel which seems
to have resolved the problem.
I downloaded the following files:
linux-headers-3.11.0-031100rc6_3.11.0-031100rc6.201308181835_all
/home/steve/Desktop/ub
Following another reboot I had no further error messages regarding
bluetooth or anything else. The wifi adapter is now flashing
intermittently whereas it didn't before. I don't know if this is related
to my original problem but I thought I'd mention it in case the fan
speed and the bluetooth error
The bluetooth error message has reappeared on subsequent boot ups. All
else seems to be ok though.

I considered updating the BIOS but couldn't see the point as this only
became a problem after upgrading to Ubuntu 13.04. Previous versions of
Ubuntu were fine. Also there is no mention of a problem with the fan
coming out of standby on the revision history.

Currently having problems getting the BIOS onto usable media. The option
that writes to a bootable USB creates the files but won't boot, and the

Christopher - As I suspected, upgrading the BIOS didn't resolve the
problem. The problem only happened since upgrading to 13.04 so I really
can't see this being BIOS related.
I also tried it with BIOS version F.15 as going straight to F.19 gave an
error message on boot up so I had to go to F.15 th
