I ran into this same problem with Intrepid, fresh install from the live

when using quick search in Synaptic and regular search, I only see

This occurred while installing k3b in Karmic. The application appears
to have installed properly. I have no problems launching k3b and have
seen no problems with that app thus far.

I reverted back to the older xorg package versions which were updated
yesterday. This got rid of the issue. I can now use KDM with no errors.

Doctordruid's workaround works for me also. I upgraded the packages I
had previously downgraded regarding xorg, etc and performed the steps in
doctordruid's workaround. I rebooted and was able to use kdm with no
problem.

Jonathan,
Thank you. Deleting the deb package out of the cache did the trick. I
had tried running apt-get autoclean cache earlier, but it didn't resolve
this. However, your suggestion worked.
Thanks again

I saw the same thing "Traksius" reported a few comments above. I
couldn't open any gui app w/ root priviledges with "gksudo" or "gksu".
I could not open Synaptic from the menu after entering my password,
either. However, after stopping networking, I could successfully use

I would like to add that I do not receive the error "gtk warning . . .
cannot open display :0.0" if I stop networking. The error only occurs
when networking is started. I also do not have this problem when using
"kdesudo" whether in a Gnome session or KDE4 session.

After installing "kmix" and adjusting the volume for the "master"

across several reboots. I will test in the Gnome environment also and
report the results.
