I am just chiming in that I have a Dell Studio Slim 540s with the same
issue. I have installed ALSA 1.0.18rc3 and have lockups when attempting
to unmute the IEC958 device. I was able to successfully unmute the
device in 1.0.17, however it had no audible effect.

I think I've fixed this. It appears the the field of the utmp structure
that holds the X display changed between feisty and gutsy, so timeoutd
has basically been completely broken for managing timeouts on local X
sessions for gutsy and hardy.

it's not in my fstab i only mount it using nautilus and also tried smbclient.
I don't know if this helps but I noticed that when rexluv copyed a directory
smbclient if it should get the directory, on my computer smbclient asks if it
should get a file(with weird letters), even though i asked it to
someone else please test this i can nolonger help as i don't own that
computer or wireless card anymore.

I just tried backports-modules again with my minipci rt2500; it
definitely doesn't fix the problem. Connection is at 1MB/s and file
transfer speeds match this.

I got it to work by installing the old Nvidia driver from the restricted
drivers (ver. 96), then rebooting.
After rebooting I installed the newer Nvidia (180.11) driver and it worked.
It's not really a solution, but more of a workaround...
