I experienced a similar issue with Gem in Karmic on an amd64.
Reverting to gem_0.90.0.1-2.2_amd64.deb from the jaunty repos allowed Gem to
function with avi files.
Puredata 0.41.4-1.

ubuntu-orchestra packages causes the 'lmnsd_gtls.so' complaint to disappear:
