i've installed ubuntu 10.04 today and i had the same problem.
adding "nomodeset" to disable kernel modesetting fixes the problem, so
this could be a video driver issue.

1. hit the hibernate button, display turns off, no data is written on disk,
system hung, forced poweroff fixes the problem, on reboot networking is
disabled:
turns out that APIC is not working well on this machine, disabling it makes it
successfully dump ram data
i forgot to add that i'm using kernel 2.6.35.10
