All I can say is that I did a reinstall of Kubuntu 12.04 (precise) and
the problem went a way.

(precise) It seems OK with kubuntu 11.10
I do get a similar problem with Filzilla and Ubuntu 12.04 (precise)
If I keep loading foxtrotgps eventually it runs for a while
