There are two copies of kdeglobals config file in kubuntu-default-settings,
with the same contents:
/usr/share/kubuntu-default-settings/kde4-profile/default/share/config/kdeglobals
/etc/kde4/kdeglobals
The latter should probably be removed.

The encoding problem actually looks like kdesu problem to me:

/usr/lib/onepin-opensc-pkcs11.so , .la and .a files are not included in
libopensc2 package (nor in any other packages).
This causes some cards (e.g. Estonian ID card) to ask for PIN2 although only
PIN1 is required.

The attached patch installs /usr/lib/onepin-opensc-pkcs11.so and .la and fixes
the PIN2 issue.
Note however that it does not install the .a files.

The same bug happens here as well, after installing the Estonian language pack
extension.
Problem seems to be caused by the extension resetting Firefox homepage to blank
page which causes history not to work.
I can reproduce it like this:
* Create new profile
* Install Locale Switcher 2.1

1) In preferences, change "When Firefox starts" to "Show a blank page" and
delete content of the "Home Page" lineedit.
2) Close preferences and restart firefox
Now you get a blank page and history doesn't work.

I have the same problem on Dell Inspiron 6400. As with others, it worked fine
in Feisty.
I get exactly the same results as Oliver when running those command. Also
changing the brightness from the Power Manager (via the slider) works just fine.
