after the installation completed... it didn't prompt me it was completed

I tried to boot the laptop. Grub didn't work, didn't even get a menu
Got back on the live cd ran update-grub, it generated a menu.lst for me
ran grub-install
got a menu in boot loader but
ok i think the problem is i dont have a an initrd, although i do have a
initrd.bak

had to change root from root=/boot/grub/unionfs to root=/dev/hda2
So i got past the boot loader and gdm wont start
BECAUSE I DONT EVEN HAVE A /VAR/LIB directory
LAME!
Can't even run apt-get

my installation never prompted that it completed, or gave and error
but when i woke up it was no longer installing so i assumed it worked,
had boot loader problems
after i fixed booted up had gdm error discovered i dont even have a
/var/lib folder

After installing i get to the login screen and type in my name and
password .
It starts to show a loading screen and then just stops and sometimes
shows a trash window with nothing in it.
Most of the time it just logs me back out

I tried running apt-get update
then apt-get upgrade and got 283 new packages
i was hoping it would fix things but every .so file gave me an error
from ldconfig
Not a valid elf file missing magic bits or something

seems to be gtk and gnome stuff having that weird ELF magic bit error
im running gnome but alt+f2 run menu dont work, gedit dont work, most
gtk apps it seems
