I am using Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. CTRL+AlT+Backspace also won't help.

a closer look reveals that it's the "Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD Daemon" that's
not getting stopped.

in the same room is doing just fine. I can't say for sure, but the problem seems
to be due to the DHCP daemon [failed].
I have included my /var/log/syslog also.
It really breaks my heart when I have to power down my machine using the power
button :(( .
