I have not performed the install you suggested as of yet (i plan on
doing that today), but I did install Kubuntu 10.10 onto another machine
and it does not have the same issue. If I am not mistaken, the major
differences between the two distros (Ubuntu and Kubuntu) is the desktop
packages

Just updated the kernel per your instruction, and have no change in
behavior in Ubuntu 10.10 on my netbook. System still freezes on
shutdown or restart.

Also this issue is not plymouth related. I have tested with "quiet
splash" removed and still have the same issue with shutdown or restart.
I did perform another small experiment to narrow down the issue. If you
select Shutdown or Restart from that same "power" menu (name based on
what the icon l

Did as instructed and it had the unexpected result of actually working,
however, if i choose shutdown from the power menu, I see the following
when the machine locks up:
Starting GNU distributed object mapper: gdomap.
speech-dispatcher disabled; edit /etc/default/speech-dispatcher
* Start
I see this every single time i use the power menu when logged in to do
the shutdown, this is very consistent behavior (9 out of 10 times)
If I select logout and let ubuntu log me out first, I can then choose
shutdown from the log in screen and the system halts properly.

just realized that I didn't directly answer the questions yes the PC
is shut down regularly... it is a netbook so I power it on, use it, then
power it off to conserve battery. Yes the same shows after 2
shutdowns... it actually shows for each and every shutdown unless i log
out first.

This exact same issue is occuring for me as well. I am using Ubuntu
10.10 Netbook Remix (which i have patched) installed on an Acer Aspire
One AOD250-1151 Netbook. If I select shutdown and/or restart from the
power menu, the machine clears the desktop and instantly freezes at the
"purple screen".
