I have the same problem on 64-bit Ubuntu 8.04. I also notice that
virtualbox-modules is "recommended" and therefore not installed, could
that be it?

I'm having similar problems on my System76 Starling netbook.
I get the Ubuntu splash screen, then it goes back to a text screen with
cursor blinking at the top left and mouse cursor visible.
I'm able to switch back to full X screen by pressing ctrl-alt-F7.

I'm experiencing the same problem on my Core i7 Desktop system with
nvidia graphics card.
I installed 10.04 Alpha 3, upon rebooting I ran the upgrade manager and
it downloaded and installed over 500 new packages.
I did not do any other configuration changes other than doing the
upgrade.
