1) with the line un-commented (default situation)
- "drum sound" at the beginning
- NO "login sound" at desktop loading
- master channel muted

Same issue here. I followed

Same here, speakers all OK but mic is dead. My laptop is a Toshiba
Satellite U405-S2856 and is on Karmic Koala 32-bit.
The odd thing is that the mic (sort of) worked with Ubuntu 9.04, but it
broke on upgrade.

back I could fix it editing /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and adding
some options, but that stopped working.

The internal mic doesn't worl, the app Sound Recorded doesn't capture
anything. I have noticed that USB mics do work, though.

I have the same issue with almost the same laptop, mine is a Toshiba
Satellite U405-S2856. Notice that this bug is duplicated in
